MY JOURNEY
From Sea to Studio
A Life of Service
Hello, I’m Mónica. A proud U.S. Navy (Ret.) with Texas roots and a deep appreciation for the moments that shape our lives. After more than 31 years of service in the United States Navy, including five deployments, precision, trust, and attention to detail became second nature. My career took me to more than 25 countries around the world. Through every mission, every port, and every homecoming, I learned something that stayed with me long after the uniform.
While places may change, the moments that matter most remain the same: Love, Family, Connection.
Between goodbye and welcome home, photographs hold the moments that matter most.
Where It All Began
From the early days of waiting weeks for physical copies of photographs to now receiving images almost moments after they are taken, technology has changed dramatically. What has never changed is the value of the moment being preserved. Photography became essential within the life of a military family. When service meant missing birthdays, school programs, anniversaries, and milestones, photographs carried the weight of presence. They became the way memories were delivered across distance.
I remember standing on the pier before deployment, holding onto the final moments before departure, watching until I could no longer see my child. In those quiet seconds, I understood something clearly. Photographs would become a guiding force. They would be the bridge between presence and absence.
Why Photography Matters
Photography grew from that understanding. A desire to preserve the quiet, powerful in-between moments that often pass too quickly. The unplanned laughter, the steady hand squeeze, the look that says everything without words. These are the moments that make up our lives, and they deserve to be remembered.
My Perspective
My path to photography was forged on the steel decks of U.S. Navy ships. serving my country taught me the value of discipline and the beauty of precision, but it was the quiet human moments shared across shifting horizons that captured my heart and shaped the way I see the world. Today, I trade the vast sea for the intimate stories of your lives, bringing that same focus and intention to every photograph I create.
Today, I’m proud to call Dunn, North Carolina home. Through Monica West Photography, I serve families, couples, and individuals across North Carolina with the same dedication and care that shaped my years of service, paired with a warm and relaxed approach that allows people to feel comfortable, natural, and fully present during their session.
